The next day, I climbed into the carriage headed for the temple with Axion held securely in my arms.

“Are you really sure he’ll be okay?”

“I’ve told you several times already. The barrier I placed on that brat is perfect. Not even the temple, nor any of the other Transcendents, will ever be able to notice that there’s a Dragon Heart of a Demon Dragon embedded in that brat’s heart.”

Dazar, who was sitting across from me, waved his hand dismissively. There was even a hint of irritation on his face. I had been asking him over and over since last night whether Axion’s Dragon Heart would really be okay.

“What if you’re wrong? What are you going to do then? First the dog, and now…”

“Then don’t take him with you if you’re that worried.”

“But Axion encountered a monster too.”

And he even woke me up saying, “Mama.”

Dazar shrugged as though he had given up.

“If they somehow notice that this brat’s heart is unusual and come after him, I’ll risk my life to save him.”

“…Then you’ll end up making an enemy of the entire temple, won’t you?”

“Even if that happens, I’ll save him. You saw it last time. I keep my promises.”

Promises? When did he ever keep a promise?

As I narrowed my eyes and stared at him suspiciously, Dazar sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

“So don’t just barge into a man’s bedroom like that from now on. It’s dangerous.”

“Huh? A man? Where’s the man?”

“……”

As I looked around the carriage, Dazar’s face crumpled horribly.

Thinking about it, I had indeed barged into Dazar’s bedroom late last night after suddenly remembering something. I had grabbed him just as he was about to go to bed and told him,

“Axion should probably go to the temple tomorrow too!”

At those words, his face had twisted as though he were looking at a completely insane person.

Perhaps remembering what had happened yesterday, Dazar crossed his arms, turned his face away, and shut his mouth. It was a clear gesture that he intended to remain silent until we arrived.

Meanwhile, the carriage had already set off and was moving at quite a fast pace.

Well, since Dazar was that confident about it, I decided to put my worries aside for now and head to the temple with Axion.

‘Axion’s asleep, too….’

Even inside the moving carriage, Axion was sleeping peacefully. I carefully adjusted him in my arms before taking out the small booklet I had tucked away inside my clothes.

The booklet Dazar had given me yesterday.

I had brought it along so I could read it whenever I had a spare moment.

Thud.

“Ah!”

Something else had been caught on the booklet as I pulled it out, and it fell onto the floor with a soft thud.

It was the pouch containing the stone Morocanil had left behind the other day.

I hurriedly tried to pick up the pouch, but with Axion in my arms, it wasn’t easy.

“Excuse me.”

“……”

“Knock, knock.”

Dazar didn’t answer even after I called him several times. It was only after I moved over beside him and poked him in the side with my elbow that he finally turned his head toward me.

“You know, I noticed this when you suddenly barged into my room last night, too. Don’t you think you’re a little too close to people?”

“Huh? We’re inside a carriage. What else can I do?”

I answered while glancing back and forth between him and the space separating us. His expression immediately turned irritated.

“That’s not the kind of distance I’m talking about. I mean, a noble lady is normally supposed to maintain a certain distance from others, especially gentlemen… No. Forget it. You were never an ordinary noble lady to begin with.”

What was that supposed to mean? It sounded almost like an insult.

Well, if he had just looked at me when I called him, none of this would have happened. Hmph.

Anyway, I was convinced that there would never be a day when being with Dazar put me in a good mood. I pointed toward the floor with my index finger.

“Please pick that up for me. I don’t think I can pick it up right now since my hands are full. As a gentleman.”

Dazar stared at me with a sullen expression, then glanced at Axion. Surprisingly, he picked up the pouch without a single complaint and handed it to me.

But just as he was about to give it to me without much expression, his movement suddenly stopped.

“What is this?”

“Huh? What?”

“I mean what’s inside this? What is it?”

Dazar’s face had become quite serious as he stared down at the pouch. I snatched it from his hand and tucked it back into my clothes.

“What do you mean? It’s a stone.”

“A stone?”

“Yes. You touched it yourself, so you should know. It’s just an ordinary stone.”

“Where did you get it?”

His expression was still serious.

For some reason, I began to feel as though I had done something wrong. I almost shrank my shoulders—

Then I suddenly felt indignant and glared at him.

“Why do you need to know? It isn’t even mine, so don’t ask me all these questions. I don’t know anything either.”

“……”

Dazar slightly furrowed his brow.

Judging by his reaction, I was beginning to feel uneasy.

“Why? Is there something wrong with this stone?”

“It isn’t dangerous. It’s just…”

“Yes?”

At least it wasn’t dangerous.

But then why did he still look like that?

“No. That idiot must be up to something strange again. Just throw it away.”

That idiot?

The way he said it made it sound as though he knew exactly who the owner of the stone was.

“Is that idiot Morocanil?”

“……What? You even know his name?”

Dazar’s expression became even more menacing.

“Yes, well. Somehow. By chance…?”

Compared to the man standing in front of me, he was practically an angel.

Dazar narrowed his eyes, clearly dissatisfied with my vague answer. Then he let out a small sigh before speaking.

“Yeah. It’s him. The countless barriers that idiot has placed are enough to give me a headache. How did I not notice this until now?”

His narrowed eyes briefly held a question mark before turning into an exclamation mark as he looked at me.

“Ah. It’s because of you.”

“Hmm.”

A body that barriers couldn’t affect.

So it must have been because the stone had been beside me.

“Oh? But if you’re talking about barriers…”

I was about to ask whether someone who could use barriers had to be another Transcendent, but I never got the chance.

“Waaaah!”

Perhaps I had been holding him uncomfortably while talking to Dazar, because Axion woke up and began crying miserably.

Thanks to Axion fussing all the way until we reached the temple, I never got the chance to ask Dazar anything more about Morocanil.

“Wow.”

It was huge, and overflowing with holiness.

That was my first impression when I arrived at the temple and looked up at the enormous structure.

Tall, elongated walls made entirely of ivory stretched toward the sky.

Behind those walls stood several buildings with pointed spires, as though they were determined to reach as close to the heavens as possible. Their strange shapes somehow gave the entire place a peculiar sense of stability.

“It looks interesting.”

“There’s nothing much to see. The Siastor estate is prettier.”

At first, I wondered what he meant. But as I followed Dazar inside, I began to understand.

There really wasn’t much to see inside the temple.

Forget the wildflowers that bloomed outside. There wasn’t even a garden, something you would normally expect to find in a building like this.

Not only were there no gardens, but there were no ordinary works of art or paintings either.

There was nothing but white walls and white floors.

Moreover, no one passed through the corridor we were walking along, making it feel as though the two of us had entered some unreal space.

“This really is a temple, right?”

“It is. And this is its very heart.”

“……”

Thanks to entering through a separate entrance used only by Transcendents, we had reached the very center of the temple almost instantly.

“That’s why there’ll be even fewer people here. There really isn’t anything here, either. This is the true nature of the temple.”

“The true nature…?”

Why was he suddenly talking about its true nature?

I narrowed my eyes at Dazar as he suddenly brought up such a strangely difficult concept.

“Do you know the name of the god worshipped in this temple?”

“Uh…”

What was it again?

The god worshipped by the temple, which supposedly worked alongside the Transcendents to protect this continent…

Hmm. Let me think…

“There isn’t one.”

“What?”

“There’s no name. No one knows that god’s name. We simply call them ‘God.’”

Come to think of it, I had never heard the god’s name anywhere.

“What does that have to do with this place?”

“It’s similar to why there’s nothing here. Only the Saintess, who can communicate with that god, knows anything about them. Even the priests here don’t know.”

“Then how do they worship god?”

“Who knows?”

Dazar chuckled as though he found the whole thing amusing and shrugged.

“I’m not particularly interested, so I don’t know.”

Is he really a Transcendent?

Making an extremely blasphemous statement, Dazar continued walking ahead.

Axion had stopped crying after we arrived at the temple, so I hugged him tightly and followed behind Dazar.

Eventually, we arrived in front of a huge white door that looked to be about twice the height of an adult man.

“Now, you go in first.”

“Huh? Me first?”

“Yes. There’ll be other Transcendents coming as well. If they find out you came with me, it might become troublesome, so go in, receive the ritual, and leave first. I already told them that you and this brat would be going in ahead of everyone else.”

Come to think of it, it was rather strange that I had gotten involved in the events of the ‘Day of the Rift.’

It had only happened because barriers didn’t work on my body.

I quickly understood what Dazar was trying to do, so I nodded and pushed open the white door.

As I pushed it open, I suddenly realized something.

‘Wait. What exactly am I supposed to receive here?’

And that question was answered on its own after the door slammed shut behind me.

“Welcome.”

Or rather, the answer came when I saw the woman sitting demurely in the middle of the enormous room.

“It’s nice to meet you, Lady Evaroar.”

The woman had long white hair cascading down her back and looked holy at first glance.

“I’m the Saintess. I don’t really have a name. You can simply call me Saintess. Now, would you please sit down in front of me?”
