Hilon’s answer was simple.

“Take a walk, see the flowers.”

Had he gone somewhere and read a parenting book or something?

He was acting exactly like a machine that had been programmed with basic commands.

Take a walk after eating. Just like that.

‘A walk… That’s nice.’

Fresh grass, trees, and flowers always made Chesha feel happy.

But not for Hilon.

From the start, it was rare for him to show interest in anything or to have feelings at all.

That’s exactly why Chesha grew suspicious. She knew Hilon didn’t particularly like flowers.

Feeling increasingly uneasy, she decided to push back a little.

“I don’t yike it.”

“But you bought flowers at the stall earlier.”

“….”

Chesha kept her mouth shut.

Maybe it was just in his nature as a Heresy Inquisitor, but he interrogated people like it were second nature, like breathing.

When Hilon saw Chesha clamping her mouth shut, he frowned slightly.

Realizing his mistake, he softened his voice and spoke more gently.

“You don’t need to be afraid of me. Didn’t I say I’m your escort knight?”

It’s just a temporary job…

Once the escort knight job was over, he’d return to being the Heresy Inquisitor.

So why did he keep trying to reassure a child by bringing up the escort knight title?

‘Speaking like he’s going to protect me forever…’

Chesha snorted inwardly.

She knew that thought had never even crossed his mind.

And yet—despite knowing better—the moment she heard that low, calm voice, something inside her softened.

The place Hilon brought Chesha to was deep inside the temple.

A quiet courtyard tucked between buildings, off-limits to outsiders.

Since the temple was located in the empire’s capital, it was incredibly wealthy.

And the courtyard reflected that.

But unlike the extravagant gardens of the imperial palace, this one was designed to create a sense of sacred calm.

As Chesha gazed at the peaceful garden, a sudden realization struck her.

‘So this is why Kiern was trespassing into other people’s gardens.’

Sometimes, she also wanted to trespass just to enjoy something this lovely.

With a smile, she took in a deep breath, happily savoring the scent of the flowers.

Hilon gently took the puppy from her arms and set it down on the grass.

It was an unexpected gesture of kindness, but one that only ended up irritating Hata, the fake puppy.

With a low growl, Hata puffed up and barked, clearly trying to act threatening.

However, Hilon had already turned his gaze elsewhere.

Failing to intimidate anyone, Hata sulked, ears drooping.

But soon, with a vigilant stance, his eyes flashed as he trailed after him.

In that case, it was he who looked like the scared one.

She laughed at the adorable Hata, then the wind blew.

The sound filled the peaceful garden like a gentle whisper.

“….”

Hilon ran a hand through his wind-blown hair.

Strands, silver like thread, tangled briefly between her fingers.

He looked like a divine figure—beautiful, serene, like a lily in full bloom.

A man who seemed made for the sacred quiet of the temple, yet whose face remained calm and untouched by anything around him.

It always had.

Hilon was always distant, insensitive to everything.

Maybe it was because she wanted to disturb that still, calm lake—those quiet blue eyes.

Maybe that’s why she kept bothering Hilon.

She remembered the flowers she had carved onto his body.

That might have been the only time Hilon had ever reacted so violently in his life.

‘I forced someone who didn’t want it and carved it into him.’

She had trapped his struggling body with thorn bushes and slowly etched a flower pattern onto his skin.

Just so he could fully feel the pain of being marked.

Only now did she feel a twinge of regret.

Still, it was that humiliation—the mark of the witch fairy carved into him—that kept Hilon alive.

In the end, he survived by feeding on his anger.

‘Isn’t that a good thing?’

She had managed to convince herself, but then Hilon, sensing her gaze, slowly turned to look at Chesha.

His clear blue eyes, full of light, fixed on her.

And then, almost under his breath, he murmured,

“It looks so similar….”

His gaze lingered on Chesha’s face.

His muttered words were laced with dry laughter and resignation.

“It’d be ridiculous to deny it.”

Without a word, Chesha reached out and gently plucked a white petal from his hair.

Just then, footsteps echoed through the corridor surrounding the courtyard.

“Hilon-nim!”

He was a thin man wearing a monocle.

Hilon’s lieutenant, Darren, whom Chesha had seen earlier.

Chesha’s eyes lingered on the monocle.

Beneath the glass, a faint scar was visible.

‘He still hasn’t erased it.’

With divine power, even a scar that small could have been healed.

Especially for someone in Darren’s position.

And yet, the man chose to keep the scar.

As a holy knight, he wasn’t allowed to show any imperfections on his body, so he simply wore a monocle to cover them.

Darren, walking up to Hilon, gave his report without delay.

“The young master of House Basilian appears to know nothing.”

At the mention of Belzeon, Chesha looked up in surprise.

Had they interrogated him while she wasn’t looking?

Sensing her concern, Darren quickly waved a hand and explained.

“Nothing serious—I just asked if he knew anything about Baby-nim’s birth parents.”

Chesha winced inwardly at the awkward honorific ‘Baby-nim,’ feeling a slight throb in her head.

Darren, perhaps noticing, gave her a gentle smile.

“I do it because I want to help.”

“About…?”

“I’m assuming that Baby-nim’s mother is being chased by someone.”

Darren shrugged and said, “I think he hid it in an orphanage because he couldn’t afford to take care of the baby.”

“We know a little about Baby-nim’s real mother, and she’s definitely not the type to abandon her daughter and run away. She takes care of her own people fiercely. Just by looking at the dog shapeshifter….”

The confidence in his words caused her some embarrassment.

It was the same for Hilon, and she couldn’t understand why he trusted her so completely.

“She will definitely come to find Baby-nim.”

Darren smiled softly as he lifted his monocle.

“Helping Baby-nim’s biological mother accomplish that is my goal.

Chesha swallowed a laugh.

This was the trouble with people who were too clever.

His exceptional skills in investigating heresy shone once again.

With just a few small clues, he quickly pieced together the situation.

‘The real problem is that the situation he deduced never actually existed…’

Where had it all gone wrong?

It seemed both of them were already firmly convinced, so clearing up the misunderstanding wouldn’t be easy.

‘I don’t know.’

For now, she couldn’t return to being the witch fairy.

Hata’s potion wasn’t finished, and if baby Chesha disappeared too soon, Kiern might grow suspicious.

She figured that if she just left things be for a while, then later returned to Richesia, gave her a few good pricks with flowers and thorns, and tied her to the Chain of Condemnation, the misunderstanding would resolve itself.

“Anyway, it would be good to at least find your father.”

Darren studied Chesha’s face carefully, found it interesting, and then said.

“I am dying of curiosity. What kind of man is the wicth fairy….”

Darren, who had been chatting without thinking, suddenly stopped talking.

He closed his mouth and gave Hilon an awkward smile.

Then, slowly, he backed away.

“Ah, uh… Come to think of it, I still have unfinished business with Young Master Belzeon. I’ll take care of it later.”

With that, Darren quickly disappeared.

What had he seen that made him flee so fast?

Chesha, watching Darren’s retreating, glanced at Hilon.

Unconsciously, she swallowed.

At first glance, his face was as expressionless as ever.

However….

“I’m looking for it in various ways, so if you remember anything about your real father, tell me.”

His blue eyes had already become those of an executioner.

A soft voice slipped quietly from between his thin lips.

“Anything is fine.”

Chesha nodded eagerly without thinking.

Her nonexistent biological father would have been better off staying hidden.

But thanks to Hilon, she had even come to the temple.

Chesha hoped she could stay quiet for a while longer.

However, Kiern was by no means a formidable opponent.

A few days later, late at night.

Count Basilian visited the temple.
