Rainbow City Chapter 6

The jeep’s tires spun due to the sudden speed.

“Why didn’t you remove the barbed gate?”

As he shouted, the jeep, which was making the sound of an overheated engine, began to run forward. The car slipped through the barbed wire fence that was barely ajar, and warning sounds began to emanate from the car’s body.

[Beep! Emergency! You have entered the Red Zone 13. Please turn your car back. Emergency! Emergency! Emergency!]

“Who doesn’t know that?”

Kwak Soohwan turned off the emergency notification on the navigation system and stepped on the accelerator hard once more. When he looked to the side, he saw Seokhwa holding his belt tightly with both hands.

“Don’t worry.”

“…Yes.”

He thought if he could say one word, he would say ‘yes’. Kwak Soohwan laughed out loud.

“The day I came in to get the drinks, the Adam people here were almost wiped out.”

As they said, it was designated as a Red Zone because there might still be some Adam(s) left.

“So, I think Dr. Seok is lucky. Right now, I’m the only one in Rainbow City that’s as good as me.”

“Major Kwak Soohwan, you are not the one who murdered Dr.Oh, right?”

Seokhwa asked calmly.

“Who is it? What kind of bastard is spreading rumors again? Well, since I was the only drinking friend of that old man, it was natural for strange rumors to spread, but is there one more rumor besides that? Also, the rumor that I grabbed you by the back of the head and threw him into the soup. You know, that’s not true, right?”

“Yes, I know. But, the other rumor is true.”

“What?”

“Major Kwak Soohwan’s put his erect genitals in my mouth.”

He reflexively blocked his foot from going to the brake and stepped on the accelerator harder.

“Let’s clear something up. I took it off without even touching your mouth .”

“Why did you choose to put it in my mouth?”

The only lights that illuminated the dark road were headlights. Kwak Soohwan looked back at Seokhwa with a puzzled expression. Seokhwa folded his blanket neatly and put it in his backpack. Although the inside of the car was dark, it was easy to see that his face was expressionless.

After zipping up his bulging backpack, Seokhwa restarted the navigation system that Kwak Soohwan had turned off. He started giving directions to Dr. Oh’s home address. When the instruction to turn right came 200 meters ahead, Kwak Soohwan turned his steering wheel in that direction.

“I don’t think you really want to hear an answer.”

“Yes.”

As he said, Seokhwa wasn’t really curious about it. All he could think of was that for some reason he had an erection and he didn’t want to handle it with his hands.

“Dr. Seok, are you able to get an erection?”

“…I can.”

“I thought you were as dry as a stone so I was wondering if you could perform a night’s work well.”

“Well, stones are not dry. It is as wet as it could be.”

“Ah, so you collected those precious stones of yours and put them in someone else’s sock?”

“Why did you give me the socks, then?”

It might not seem like a conversation worth having while driving through a dangerous area, but there was no law against it.

“You are the kind of idiot who is dying because of the cold, but still digging in the sand with your bare feet, making me feel pity for you.”

Suddenly he looked down and saw that he was wearing sneakers, but he still couldn’t see his socks.

“Do you have a grudge against socks?”

“My feet are very hot.”

When his feet got hot, his head quickly started to hurt, so even whenever it was cold, he rarely wore socks.

[You are nearing your destination.]

Hearing the navigation sound, Kwak Soohwan turned on the high beam lights to illuminate the surrounding area wider and brighter. He drove slowly and looked around at the houses close together.

“Do you know exactly which house it is?”

“I’ve visited a few times.”

Dr. Oh was fond of Seokhwa in his way. Before going down to Jeju Island, he sometimes invited him to his house and treated him to dinner. His wife was kind, and their son, Oh Cheongun, was Seokhwa’s immediate senior.

“Over there, it’s that house with the garden.”

Seokhwa raised his index finger and pointed to a house diagonally in the direction. It was a house surrounded by a low fence that reached up to the calves, but what was strange was that the windows and doors had iron bars. Since it was recently designated as a red zone, the devices have been installed since it was a safe zone before. Of course, some houses were prepared in advance, so there was nothing too strange.

Seokhwa unbuckled his belt and put on his backpack, causing his body in the passenger seat to jump forward further.

“Can we stay in the car for now?”

“Why? Are you afraid that if we run into Adam, you will cause trouble for me?”

“No, I don’t want to die.”

As he spoke calmly, Kwak Soohwan laughed again.

“You’d better get off with me, then. Anyway, while driving around, seeing how the Adam bastards aren’t coming out, it seems like they were completely wiped out.”

Kwak Soohwan took off the cape from his uniform and threw it into the back seat, then walked to the passenger seat. When he opened the door, Dr.Seok fell to the floor.

It might not have been because he heard Adam’s strange cries, but when he put his legs down, his shoulders became stiff. The silence surrounding the empty city gave him a strange feeling of loneliness. Seokhwa knew this city when it was still alive.

When he was invited by Dr.Oh and sat at the dining table in his house, the large dog and cat he raised approached him and started acting cute, and he could often hear the laughter of children in the playground. The world before Adam appeared would always have been like that. One day, it was not an alien invasion, but a monster created by humans that shattered the peace.

Kwak Soohwan kicked away the trash blown by the wind and stood near the entrance. He flicked around with a military flashlight the length of his index finger. The last thing he saw was the front door, but it was locked tightly.

“Give me the gun.”

Instead of giving him the gun, Seokhwa reached out her hand and opened the door lock cover. The blue light blinked convulsively as if the battery had run out and soon disappeared.

“Do you know the password?”

“I know, but I guess it’s no use. I will give you a gun, so Major Kwak Soohwan please write a report on the use of the gun yourself.”

It was before he finished speaking. Kwak Soohwan, who had taken a step back, kicked the doorknob.

“I hated working hard, but I hate writing reports even more.”

The reason Major Lee, Major Kwak Soohwan, and several other surviving soldiers were able to fight Adam with their bare hands was that they had escaped their ordinary bodies and succeeded in evolving. The evolution that has occurred from the time humans first came to this world until now has been mysterious and wonderful.

Seokhwa looked down at his legs for a moment. But is it true that he evolved? Others say he had great intelligence, but he had no idea. He just repeated the research like an input macro.

Seokhwa took a small breath and exhaled, following Kwak Soohwan in. He was afraid that he might get dizzy, so he stayed alert, and maybe it helped that he slept in the car, so his legs didn’t feel heavy.

“I think we should go to the study on the second floor. Dr. Oh has a lot of important research materials in his study.”

“The military police must have already cleaned it up once after that old man died.”

“They probably wouldn’t have found it as far as I know.”

Seokhwa followed closely behind Kwak Soohwan as he climbed the wooden stairs. He spun around so his back was against his. He took out his gun, held it in both of his hands and walked backwards up the stairs at the speed he was going up.

“Dr. Seok, what on earth are you doing now?”

Kwak Soohwan suddenly stopped and spoke in a tone that implied he couldn’t understand.

“I’m shielding you.”

He found Seokhwa strange this time.

“I saw this somewhere. Don’t climb up backward, just stick close to me and follow along properly. Put it in. Don’t shoot for no reason.”

Seokhwa looked at the gun he was holding and calmly put it in its holster. Again, only the creaking sound of wood was heard, but there was no sound of Adam’s characteristic cracking of their neck. Since the door was locked so tightly, no one could have broken in.

Although he was able to walk a little faster, Kwak Soohwan kept his pace in fear that Dr. Weakling might stumble.

“From here on the left.”

After going up the stairs, the first room on the left was Dr. Oh’s study. Fortunately, the door was not locked, so Kwak Soohwan went in first and checked the surroundings with a flashlight.
