The boy in the far-left cage was rolling his big eyes nervously, trying to gauge the situation.

Derrick’s eyes widened when he noticed the scales on the boy’s temples.

‘That must be Donaty.’

“Can’t you stay still?!”

Derrick, barely dodging Gangchi’s attacks, was growing more frustrated. He threw a dagger from his pocket, aiming for the wooden lock on the cage.

But the dagger merely clanged against the bars and fell uselessly to the ground.

A thick fist grazed just above Derrick’s shoulder. A bead of sweat formed on his forehead.

‘If only we had one more person…’

Just as Derrick was starting to feel anxious, Gangchi suddenly stopped. He glanced between Derrick and the cages behind him, then smirked.

“So, you’re here to steal my slaves.”

Gangchi stepped closer to the cages, his wide lips curling into an unpleasant grin.

He had realized that no matter how much he moved, he couldn’t catch Derrick and Kanit, so he stopped.

“You don’t seem like those damn human butchers. I heard new slave traders have been popping up in my territory lately. Were you trying to break into their network? There are so many humans hiding out there, and you idiots thought you could raid Gangchi’s hideout?”

“Why is he so chatty?”

Kanit muttered.

“What did you say, you little brat?”

Gangchi bared his sharp fangs and glanced at Kanit.

A short, fat bear beastman was lying face down nearby.

“Ugh, that idiot.”

Gangchi shook his head, but still looked relaxed.

“You think I only have one lackey? There are more than ten of my men outside. You’d better finish me off quickly before they get here. If my men arrive, you won’t die a clean death.”

“Oh? Then why haven’t those more-than-ten men shown up yet?”

Derrick pointed toward the entrance with his thumb, and Gangchi’s face stiffened as he realized the truth.

“Did you cowardly bring your own gang?”

“Who’s calling who a coward?”

Derrick retorted with a smirk, but he was visibly anxious.

‘Why hasn’t anyone come in yet? Did Minella and Truke do something?’

Either way, it was a relief. Derrick gestured to Kanit.

He pointed to the cages holding the children with one finger and to Gangchi with the other.

‘I’ll handle Gangchi. You break the locks.’

Kanit nodded. At the same time, Derrick charged at Gangchi. Facing him head-on was a disadvantage, given Gangchi’s strength.

Derrick pulled out all the daggers from his pocket, gripping them between his fingers, and began throwing them one by one. Gangchi swung his hammer.

Clang! Clang!

The daggers bounced off the hammer uselessly. Derrick grimaced.

Fortunately, the sound of Kanit breaking the locks echoed through the room.

‘Just hold on a little longer.’

Then it happened.

Thud, thud! Thump, thump!

The sound of hurried footsteps grew louder. Gangchi’s face lit up with triumph.

“My men are here!”

Derrick and Kanit’s faces hardened.

But the next moment.

“Derrick! Kanit!”

Derrick and Kanit’s mouths fell open, while Gangchi’s face twisted in anger.

Flap!

Minella and Truke burst through the curtain, rushing in.

“How did you get here?

“Deal with him first!”

Gangchi, realizing the situation was turning against him, bolted for the entrance. Truke immediately slammed his large body into him.

Though Truke was strong, he was no match for Gangchi’s divine power and was pushed back.

“You dare, you human scum!”

Enraged, Gangchi tried to overpower Truke, but he wasn’t the only one fighting back.

Minella struck the back of Gangchi’s knee with the hilt of her sword.

“Ugh!”

Gangchi let out a sharp cry as his knees buckled. Truke shoved him backward.

Crash!

As Gangchi tumbled behind some boxes, Derrick and Kanit, who had been ready, quickly bound his hands and feet.

With Gangchi restrained and the unconscious bear beastman tied up, the four finally caught their breath and wiped their sweat.

“That ended faster than I thought.”

At Minella’s muttering, Kanit frowned.

“We told you to run. Didn’t you see the signal?”

Truke shook his head.

“We saw it, but we decided there was no need to run.”

“But there must’ve been a lot of Gangchi’s men outside.”

“Oh, those guys? For some reason, they were all knocked out. We tied them up with rope. That’s why we were late.”

“They were all knocked out? How?”

Derrick, bewildered, was about to ask more when something came running from behind.

“Ah, ahhh!”

Hey, hey! Kids, where are you going?”

As Kanit broke the locks, a few children screamed and bolted out.

Truke quickly moved, grabbing two of them and lifting them. Minella, Derrick, and Kanit each caught one, but they couldn’t stop all the children.

“Hey, why are they suddenly acting like this?!”

Truke, holding the struggling children under his arms, shouted in confusion. Derrick frowned.

“They probably think we’re another group of slave traders.”

“I’ll take care of this. You guys explain things to the kids and handle Gangchi and his men. No matter how bad they are, we need to consult the professor before deciding what to do with them.”

As Minella nodded, Truke handed the children to her and ran toward the entrance.

“It seems everything’s been resolved. Let’s go inside.”

Mirania walked leisurely, but the dim moonlight made it hard to see the ground clearly in the dark.

When her shoe squished into something soft, Mirania’s face twisted in disgust.

“Ugh, do these guys just poop everywhere? Why is every path a minefield?”

Grumbling, she rubbed the sole of her shoe against a rock.

Suddenly, Grecan picked her up. Mirania blinked in confusion, her eyebrows furrowing.

“What are you doing?”

“You don’t want to step in poop, right?”

Grecan replied casually, slipping his arm under her knees.

“Put me down.”

Mirania spoke sternly, but Grecan glanced around and muttered nonchalantly.

“There are at least thirty piles of poop, big and small, in the direction we’re heading.”

“…”

“Even if you’re careful, you’ll probably step in at least three of them.”

Mirania closed her eyes tightly, holding back her words.

As Grecan carried her, his lips curled into a faint smile.

When they reached the warehouse, the light spilling out made the surroundings clearer.

Mirania finally tapped Grecan’s shoulder.

“Put me down now.”

Grecan reluctantly set her down.

As she was about to step inside, Mirania paused at the sound of light footsteps coming from the entrance. Grecan stopped too.

Soon, two children appeared from outside the entrance.

“Where, where should we go?”

“Over there! Let’s duck into the alley. Otherwise, they might chase us.”

“Hey! What are you doing?!”

A rough voice erupted from the opposite side of the darkness. It was one of Gangchi’s gang members, returning from an errand.

The panicked children ran toward Mirania and Grecan.

‘Who are these kids?’

Mirania, bewildered, was about to grab the ankle of the bear beastman chasing the children when one of the kids tripped over a rock.

The child, running at full speed, teetered forward, about to fall and likely get seriously hurt.

Just as Mirania’s eyes widened in shock, an arm shot out.

A strong hand grabbed the back of the child’s neck, lifting them up and preventing the fall. The child, narrowly avoiding disaster, gasped.

“W-who are you?”

The child, now calm, looked up at Grecan with fearful eyes. Grecan simply raised an eyebrow without a word.

The bear beastman chasing them finally noticed their presence.

“Who are you?!”

Realizing they had the numbers advantage, the three bear beastmen charged forward.

Grecan, looking annoyed, waved his hand dismissively.

The bear beastmen tumbled backward, knocked out cold.

Grecan let go of the children.

The kids, too stunned to move, plopped down on the ground.

“P-please save us…”

“Why did you come out when there are people inside?”

Mirania’s voice, in contrast to Grecan’s imposing presence, sounded gentle, so the children fixed their gaze on her.

“Th-there are slave traders inside too.”

“It seems there’s been a misunderstanding. They’re here to save you. If you want help, it’s better to go inside. If you’re confident you can escape on your own, I won’t stop you.”

The two children swallowed hard and then sprinted back into the warehouse they had just fled from.

They were so terrified of Grecan that they didn’t even look back.

Grecan and Mirania casually walked toward the entrance where the children had disappeared.

Staring straight ahead, Mirania asked, “Why did you help them?”

“Help with what?”

“You caught the child who was about to fall.”

“Just…”

Grecan furrowed his brow.

“Just because it looked like they were going to fall.”

“…”

“It wasn’t like I wanted to help them or anything.”

Mirania smiled at his muttered excuse.

“Subconsciously, you wanted to help.”

“That’s not it. It’s not something so trivial.”

“That’s the instinctive kindness of a good soul. Whether it’s trivial or not. It’s a nature that even uncorrupted humans possess. Compassion, sympathy, the feeling of pity for something.”

“…”

“It’s the emotion you lost when you were consumed by hatred.”

Mirania turned her head. Grecan, with a furrowed brow, accidentally met her gaze.

Mirania smiled warmly and muttered, “It’s a relief. You’re still the Grecan I know.”
